Warmer days are gradually becoming more frequent, and rain boots and spring jackets are creeping into our entryways.

Although it may be too soon to completely pack up your winter clothing and accessories, a few easy steps can help to clear the clutter and set you up for a quick goodbye to winter when warmer weather is here to stay.

  • Take everything out of your closet/coat rack, mitten bin etc. so they’re bare.
  • Wash everything that needs to be washed.
  • Have your kids try on their snowsuits, hats, mittens and boots. If they’re already looking a little snug and you know they won’t fit by next year, put them off to the side to be donated.   Once you’re sure they will no longer be needed this year, drop them off to your neighbourhood donation centre so you aren’t wasting valuable space storing them throughout the warmer seasons.
  • Organize your mittens and gloves. If there are any without a match, throw them away, or cut them up to be used as rags for cleaning.
  • Take a look at how many hats, scarves, and pairs of gloves do you have for each person. Do you NEED all of them, or, is there an abundance that often go unused because you’re overstocked?  If there are some you can do without, add them to the box to be donated.
  • When you’re finished purging the items you’re no longer keeping, put the necessary remaining items back in your closet, coat rack etc.
  • Other items that you plan to store for next year but are no longer necessary can be packed in proper storage containers. Remember to keep the storage containers handy and choose ones that are large enough so you can easily finish packing away the items you’re still using once you know for sure they’re no longer needed.
  • Once you’re finished with your winter clothing for the year, throw anything that needs another washing through the machine, and pack them away with the items you’ve already placed in storage containers.

Now that your entrance way is clean and tidy, getting the kids out the door for school in the morning will be a breeze, and you’ll feel refreshed when you get home walk through the door.
