BC Nurses Union president Gail Duteil (right) speaking to Abbotsford nurses

BC Nurses Union president Gail Duteil was at Abbotsford hospital yesterday speaking to nurses about the need for workplace safety.

Duteil says following a savage attack on a nurse at an Abbotsford hospital a couple of weeks ago, Fraser Health did take steps protect staff.

“They have increased the number of security in the emergency department by one, so there is a dedicated safety officer present now in the emergency department, and we’re pleased to see that because this is such an unfortunate incident and it could have been prevented.”

Duteil says nurses want the province to improve safety at all hospitals and says the union won’t sign any contract until the issue is properly addressed.
