-Jeremy Phillips, who admitted to killing his cell mate at Mountain Institution last year, has pleaded guilty and sentenced to life with no chance of parole.
-City of Chilliwack to present their revised Eastern Hillsides Plan at an open house this Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 at Evergreen Hall.  It can also be found online at www.chilliwack.com 
-Talks between the BCTF and the government fall apart, with the province leaving the table.
-UVic's "Active Choices" program looking to recruit personal health coaches in Chilliwack.  Free training will be offered this weekend.  Email angela.activechoices@shaw.ca for details or to register.
-Abbotsford Police arrest an 18 yr old in connection to a violent robbery at a convenience store on Gladwin Rd Sunday night.  The clerk was punched and cut with a knife on her face.

-Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner announces his resignation, and that he's taken a position with a law firm in Vancouver.  A by-election will be scheduled for the new year.
-Operation Red Nose has its first night tonight, helping people get home safely from their holiday parties.  Call 604-393-3000 for a ride, or 393-3023 to volunteer.
-BMO study says 25% of BCers will be crossing the border at some point to do their holiday shopping.
-Chilliwack RCMP are thanking a woman in her 90s for calling them to tell them about a break and enter in progress at her neighbours house.  Mounties always ask the public to alert them about anything suspicious.
-Chilliwack Chiefs host the Penticton Vees at Prospera Centre tonight at 7.

-Chilliwack Community Services launches their annual Christmas Sharing Program, collecting toys and gifts to help families in need this holiday season.  Click here for link to CCS program page
-UFV Communications Director tells the Chilliwack Times that the core of the theatre department will be moving to Abbotsford, likely after 2015.
-Water Watch Mission/Abbotsford claims the city's water needs will eventually need to be addressed, but not until 2023 at least, so they have time to come up with a plan other than the P3 proposal at Stave Lake.
-Canada Post says you have until December19th to get your letters to Santa.  The big guy will also be available via email and twitter.  Last year, he replied to 1.2 million letters in Canada.

-Chilliwack MP Mark Strahl says new federal "self defense" bill will clarify what is allowed in terms of defending yourself and your property.
-Chilliwack Safer City Program advising pedestrians to wear reflective clothing when walking at night, and sticking to the cross walks.  Also advising drivers to pay attention at cross walks and anticipate the stop time for the car with the icier roads.
-Chilliwack RCMP apprehend a 41 yr old suspect in a local bank robbery, who they identified quickly thanks to their prolific offenders list.
-RCMP to update media later today on "significant developments" in the case of a teenage girl who was murdered in Armstrong on Halloween.
-Wives and girlfriends of Abbotsford Heat players taking part in a campaign to raise funds for families of the victims of the plane crash in September that killed an entire hockey team in Russia.

-Hope Mayor-elect Susan Ann Johnston says bringing more business and young families to Hope will be her goal for the next 3 years.
-UFV professor Hamish Telford believes the P3 funding issue for Stave Lake was the turning point in the election, and the reason George Peary was ousted from the mayors seat.
-Chilliwack RCMP arrest a 21 yr old man in connection to a stabbing at Newmark apartments on November 11, that allegedly started over someone littering.
-Darnell Pratt, the man convicted in the dragging death of Grant DePatie in 2006, was re-arrested in Esquimalt this week, after violating his parole conditions again.

-Snowfall warning will be over by this afternoon.  Turning to rainfall for the next few days.  Couple of serious accidents this morning in Chilliwack, including a truck sliding into a power pole.
-Chilliwack saw just a 17.5% voter turnout in the election.  Jason Lum and Ken Popove join the 4 incumbants on council.
-Changes to leadership in Hope, Kent, Harrison, Abbotsford and Mission.
-Chilliwack RCMP will hold their 3rd annual "Stuff the Cruiser" event on December 4th, setting up outside local grocery stores and collecting for the food bank.
-2nd giraffe dies in a week at the Greater Vancouver Zoo.
-Dr. Paul Van Buynder, Chief Medical Health Officer for Fraser Health, will discuss the flu vaccine and take questions over Twitter from noon-1pm today @fraserhealth  #fluQs
-Chilliwack Chiefs have won 6 of their last 7 games, and will host Penticton on Friday.

-Snowfall warning ended for Chilliwack.  More flurries in the forecast for the first part of the weekend, followed by more rain.
-Mt. Baker opens today, while Hemlock and Manning plan on opening early next month, hopefully earlier.

-Veterans Affairs accused of not telling 900 veterans with a 98% disability that they were entitled to a special allowance under the Pension Act.
-Liberal MLA Moira Stilwell forwards a private members bill that would make it law to remove a player from a game if a concussion is suspected.

-Several studies show that municipalities that arrange the candidates on their ballot in alphabetical order tend have more people voted in, just because their name was higher on the list.
-New Angus Reid poll suggests support for the Stave Lake water project has waned, and with the numbers so close now, it will come down to the undecided voters who show up on election day and vote in the referendum to determine whether Abbotsford moves ahead with a P3 option.
-Chilliwack firefighters will hold their annual food drive on Dec 5th and 6th, but will also be at the Chilliwack Santa Claus Parade on the 3rd collecting for the food bank.
-Federal government announces Pooled Registered Pension Plans (PPP's) where Canadians can save money by pooling their retirement savings.
-Chilliwack Chiefs host Vernon Vipers at Prospera Centre tonight at 7.

-Brian Minter awarded the "Order of Chilliwack" for his years of service to the community.  He is only the 4th person/group to recieve the honour.
-Council says goodbye to Pat Clark, who is not running again.  She has served on council for 8 years.
-Advance voting available in Chilliwack again today from 8-8 at city hall.
-MLA John Van Dongen says he hopes the City of Abbotsford and the FVRD can settle their differences.  Abbotsford wants to pull out of the regional district.  Van Dongen says there are a number of options that could be considered, including putting Abby into Metro Vancouver.
-3 Chilliwack teenagers being investigated by RCMP for their "To Troll a Predator" You Tube videos, where they went online, posing as a 15 yr old girl, to lure men.  Police say it was dangerous, and the videos have since been taken down.

-The Chilliwack Community Policing Society is hoping the city will make good on a promise to budget for a full time Block Watch program coordinator next year.  Currently the coordinator only gets paid for 20 hours per week.
-BCAA reminding drivers that winter is coming (already has in some areas), and now is a good time to familiarize yourself with winter safe driving tips www.shiftintowinter.ca 
-Community groups in Chilliwack led by the Skwah First Nations are planning a Peace Walk this Saturday, to bring awareness to gang and drug problems, not just on the reserve but across the community.
-18 yr old Dylan Reichelt, the son of BC Lions trainer Bill Reichelt, was killed this past weekend when the car he was a passenger in, went off a road in Langley.  Police believe 2 cars were racing, and charges could be laid.
-Chilliwack Chiefs won both their games this weekend, to go to 10-6-0-1 on the season.  Vernon will be in town on Thursday.

-Abbotsford Police launch "Operation Vigilance", where local businesses and organizations will sign up to look out for each other when it comes to reporting crime.

-Chilliwack RCMP looking for more information regarding a shooting on Vedder Rd around midnight on the 4th.  A resident called police about a bullet hole in their basement wall, and another bullet hole was found in a neighbouring unit.  Mounties say its lucky no one was hurt.
-175 people, and 18 candidates gathered for a forum at Evergreen Hall last night, hosted by the BIA, and discussed downtown, CEPCO, the eastern hillsides, and rail for the valley.  There is a meet and greet with the candidates tonight at the library at 6:30 and a forum tommorrow night at Yarrow Community Hall.
-Abbotsford finally asks the province for permission to pull out of the FVRD, citing high costs for services.  The process could take a year to 18 months, IF the province allows it.
-Chilliwack Chiefs will host Remembrance Day game on Friday night against Langley.  Any Veterans in town can get in for free with a guest, provided they wear their uniform or bring their military or veteran ID.

-Advance voting opportunities at Chilliwack City Hall this Wednesday and next Wednesday from 8am to 8pm.
-Sherrill Guthrie of Abbotsford has created a "candidate evaluation guide" to help voters measure candidates against each other.  Go to www.abbotsfordchamber.com to download a copy.
-Canada-wide warrant issued for the arrest of Darnell Pratt, who was just released from prison, and broke his parole conditions....again.  Pratt was convicted in the dragging death of Grant DePatie 6 yrs ago.
-People can now donate $5 to the Royal Canadian Legion by texting "poppy" to 20222.
-Canada West plays Sweden tonight at the Langley Events Centre as part of the World Junior A Hockey Challenge tournament.

-Candidates meeting for council hopefuls in Chilliwack tonight.  7pm at Promontory Heights Elementary.  There is another meeting planned for Thursday night at Yarrow Community Hall.
-Occupy Fraser Valley will hold a "general assembly"  this coming Saturday at noon outside the Clearbrook Library for those interested.
-UFV in Chilliwack will host a tour of the new campus (currently under construction) at the Canada Education Park tommorrow for local media and government officials, as a "thank you" for $3 million in funding for the project. 

-Darnell Pratt, the man convicted of killing Grant De Patie in a gas and dash in 2005, has violated his parole again, just a couple days after being released.  A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
-Chilliwack Chiefs won both their games this weekend.  They will host Langley on Friday night.

-Chilliwack Veterans will march from Cottonwood Mall to MP Mark Strahls office tommorrow morning, as part of a National Day of Protest, calling for improvements to Veterans Affairs.  The march will leave Cottonwood at 10:15am.  We're told Strahl will address the protesters.
-Scientists are trying to verify a new case of an infectious virus found in a BC salmon, which would give critics of fish farms the first real evidence to backup their case.
-UFV has signed an agreement with partners in the berry industry to create a Pacific Berry Resource Centre, which will focus on ways to improve the local yield,  better market the local industry.
-65 people showed up to last night's 2nd school board candidates meeting in Sardis.  DPAC President Gord Byers admits that's not a great turnout, and hopes more parents get involved in the election.
-Bear hit and killed by a WestCoast Express train in Ruskin this morning.

-Around 100 people came out to the first Chilliwack school board candidates debate last night.  22 of the 24 candidates showed up.  There will be another forum tonight at Sardis Secondary at 6:30.
-Mt Cheam Rotary Club hosting a volleyball tournament on Nov. 25th and 26th at the Landing Sports Centre.  Team fee is $100, and each player is asked to bring an unwrapped toy.  Proceeds go to Chilliwack Community Services for Christmas hampers.  www.cattfund.com 
-34 yr old Tina Breedon of Chilliwack charged with five counts of using counterfeit money.
-Abbotsford Police launch "Operation No Free Ride", which encourages people to use wheel locks and car alarms to prevent theft.
-Chilliwack Santa Claus Parade is one month away.  Click the parade link on our homepage for all the information on registering a float.
-Chilliwack Chiefs lose 3-2 to the Surrey Eagles.  Next home game is tommorrow vs. Prince George.

-Minimum wage goes up to $9.50/hr in BC today, but wages for servers will be set at $8.75/hr, something that's ticking off the BC Federation of Labour.
-Chilliwack and FVRD settle on a site for a new bike park.  The $200,000 park will be located at Island 22, pending approval from council today.
-Municipalities encouraging residents to compost pumpkins instead of throwing them out.
-163 charges recommended against 60 people in relation to the Stanley Cup riot in Vancouver.
-5 young people arrested in connection to an overnight stabbing in Langley.  A teenage boy is recovering at Royal Columbian.
-Abbotsford Heat forward Krys Kolanos named the AHL player of the week, after posting 4 goals and 3 assists in just 2 games.

-Valley municipalities reminding people that fireworks are illegal without a permit, which must be obtained through the fire department.
-Health Canada advises parents to check their childrens candy to ensure wrappers are sealed ("when in doubt...throw it out")  and kids should not eat homemade candy or baked goods from someone they don't know.
-BCAA road safety foundation reminding drivers to slow down, even below the speed limit in residential areas tonight.
-Veterinary Technician at Greater Vancouver Zoo recovering after suffering a vicious bite from a ring-tailed lemur during feeding on the weekend.
-Abbotsford Police looking for more witnesses to an incident at the Costco on October 8th, where a 7 yr old boy was bit by a 10 yr old boy in the washroom. 
-Chilliwack City Council to get a look at a revised plan for the eastern hillsides tommorrow, and city staff will present it to the public at an open house in early December.
-Chilliwack Chiefs won both their games this weekend.  They will host Surrey on Wednesday.

-11 people injured, a couple of them critically, after a small plane crash near the Vancouver Airport on Thursday.
-Chilliwack RCMP crime reduction unit says there have been 4 home break ins and a stolen car from the Elm/Chilliwack Central area this month.  They're reminding neighbours to call police about any suspicious activity, and lock their doors and windows when they're not home.
-Globe and Mail gives UFV "A's" in class size, quality of teaching, student faculty and interaction, and teaching style, in their latest University Report Card.

-Occupy Fraser Valley holds initial meeting in Abbotsford to discuss plans for upcoming "awareness" events.  The group will meet again next week.
-Chilliwack Downtown BIA to hold candidates meeting on November 8th at Evergreen Hall.
-2 school board candidates forums planned for next week.  On Wednesday Nov2nd at Chilliwack Secondary, and Thursday Nov3rd at Sardis Secondary.
-BCPSEA file an application with the Labour Relations Board to try and force teachers to prepare report cards, but local groups say grades are still being reported to parents via email, and online.
-Testimony continues today at the Missing Women Inquiry, as families of Robert Pickton's victims are making it clear they want the police to be held accountable.
-Canuck Place in Abbotsford has almost reached their fundraising target, but might be a few months behind schedule on the building.

-The "Occupy" movement is coming to the valley.  Occupy Fraser Valley organizers are meeting tonight to discuss plans for upcoming demonstrations.
-Chilliwack MP Mark Strahl supports Tory bill to scrap the long gun registry, saying the party has always believed that the registry is a waste of money because criminals don't register their guns.
-Abbotsford Airport says they will be affected negitavely by the $5.50 passenger inspection fee, which will be added for Canadian air and sea travellers to the States.
-20 yr old Justin Vandenberg of Surrey killed when his vehicle slipped off a back road and went down a 350 ft embankment on Hawkins Pickle Rd near Norrish Creek yesterday.

-Mission firefighter hurt after falling through the 2nd floor of a vacant home overnight, while battling the flames.
-Mark Andersen with www.thevalleyvotes.ca is encouraged by the interest so far in the civic elections.  16 of the 20 candidates for council showed up to a candidates forum on Friday, to debate local issues.
-Federal government approves P3 funding for Abbotsford to use toward the Stave Lake water project, pending the result of the November 19th referendum.
-Families of Robert Pickton's victims set to testify this week at the inquiry into the murders.
-IHIT says Stephen Leone, the man who was gunned down in Surrey this weekend, had gang connections, but won't go into details.
-Chilliwack Chiefs drop all 3 road games this weekend.  They will host Trail on Friday.

-Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi killed during the takeover of his hometown Sirte today.
-Chilliwack Schools Superintendant Michael Audet says he has not heard of any bans on kids wearing "I Love Boobies" bracelets to school, and if individual schools are banning them he would hope to hear from the principals.
-All middle and highschools, as well as a couple elementary schools in Chilliwack taking part in the "Halloween for Hunger" campaign.  Schools are asking students to bring at least one non perishable food item to school next week, and collect for the local food bank while trick or treating.
-Great BC Shakeout, part of the largest earthquake drill in the world, taking place at 10:20 this morning, encouraging people to come up with a plan in the event the big one hits.
-American research suggests a growing number of young women on university campuses are eating less during the day so they can binge drink at night, something called "drunkorexia"

-Chilliwack council recognized Dan and Luke Bergmann this week, the two men who saved an angler from certain death after he fell into the water while fishing last month.  Council also recognized 24 yr old Christopher Vang, who died trying to save two relatives from drowning on the Fraser last month.
-City council has recieved the plans for the new Chances Community Gaming Centre in Chilliwack, and will pass, pending a final review from the design review panel.
-Chilliwack RCMP looking for witnesses to an assault that happened Saturday night between 7-9 on Empress Lane near Nowell St.
-Abbotsford councillor John Smith concerned that UFV is not getting per student funding from the province, and therefore can't meet the demand.  5,000 students are on a wait list to get in.
-"I Heart Boobies" wrist bracelet creating contreversy; the bracelets, which are to promote breast cancer awareness, have been banned in a number of schools, including some in the valley.
-A Supreme Court of Canada ruling today upholds a lower court ruling that linking to someone else's website does not constitute defamation.

-2 local fishermen, Dan Bergmann and his 23 yr old son Luke, are being recognized by council today for saving a Surrey angler's life on the Fraser back in September.
-Flu clinics coming up in Chilliwack at Tzeachten Hall on October 27th and the Central Community Church November 1st. In Agassiz you can go to the Friendship centre November 3rd and 10th.
-Staff at Matsqui Institution intercepted a package of marijuana and heroin this week, when it was attempted to be smuggled in by being shot from a potato gun from half a block away.
-First all candidates forum for council hopefuls in Chilliwack will be held this Friday at 12:30 at the Coast Hotel.
-Wild Pacific salmon have been found with a deadly virus, triggering a new call for a ban on farmed Atlantic salmon in BC.

 

OCT17

 

-Final candidate lists for the upcoming municipal elections are now out.  In Chilliwack, Mayor Sharon Gaetz was acclaimed, while 21 people will vye for 6 seats on council.  In Hope, Mayor Laurie French will run against Susan Ann Johnston, while 10 people will run for 6 seats on council.  There are 5 candidates for mayor in Abbotsford, including George Peary.
-70 yr old man killed after witnesses say he turned his car onto the railroad tracks at 264th in Aldergrove overnight and ran into a train. 
-FVRD study on transportation finds 90% of people's travels are within the Fraser Valley, but a connector between Chilliwack and Abbotsford is the biggest need.
-Starting today, Canada Post will deliver letters and parcels to soldiers overseas with no postage fee required.
-Nearly 500 people attended Chilliwack Connect on the weekend, around 200 more than last year.
-RIM offers every Blackberry customer in the world $100US worth of free apps, starting this Wednesday until the end of the year, and offers an apology to customers affected by last weeks global outage.
-Chilliwack Chiefs win one, lose one, and lose one in double OT this weekend.  Will play 3 on the road this coming weekend.

-2nd annual Chilliwack Connect is a go for tommorrow from 8:30 to 4 at First Ave Christian Assembly.  Low income and homeless will get connected to appropriate social services.
-Fraser Health says they will be testing those who were in close contact with a student at Sardis Secondary who was diagnosed with tuberculosis earlier this month.
-Vigil for 24 yr old fisherman Christopher Vang being held in Chilliwack tonight.  Vang drowned in the Fraser last month after falling from the boat.  6:30pm at Island 22 boat launch.
-3 people facing charges after a grow op bust on Glenwood St.  Close to 700 plants were seized.
-First Nations Health Authority to be set up by 2013 in BC, thanks to funding from both the province and the feds.
-17 yr old Travis Daleman announces he is running for Mayor in Abbotsford.
-Today at 4pm, is the deadline to file paperwork to run in the November election.

-78 yr old Cyril Williams of Chilliwack found dead in Abbotsford.  It appears his car went down an embankment on Sumas Mtn Rd.  Williams had been missing for over a week.
-2 young children have died in Lytton, after their trailer caught fire overnight.
-Abbotsford Police investigate bizarre assault of a 7 yr old boy in the Costco washroom.
-Longtime news anchor Tony Parsons to speak at UFV lecture series on Friday at 12:30 at the Chilliwack campus theatre.

-Farm Credit Canada wrapping up their "Drive Away Hunger" event this week, and will be rolling through Chilliwack on Thursday, collecting items and cash for the local food bank.

-Abbotsford Police announce they are becoming the first municipality outside of Metro Vancouver to join the e-comm radio network, allowing them to stay in closer touch with other police agencies.
-Chilliwack RCMP say Canadian Forces have been conducting training exercises around Cultus Lake, which is why people are seeing white flares go off.
-3 more groups, including the Assembly of First Nations, pull out of the Missing Women Inquiry, citing a lack of inclusion for advocacy groups.  The hearings began today in Vancouver.
-United Way of the Fraser Valley announces they have $118,000 for priority grants this year.  These grants will go to programs that reduce homelessness, poverty, or help kids 0-6 succeed.  Go to www.uwfv.bc.ca to apply.
-BCTF goes to the Supreme Court today to get clarification on a ruling regarding the right to negotiate class size and composition.
-Chilliwack Chiefs split weekend road games.  Their record is now 3-1, and they will host Vernon at Prospera Centre on Friday.

-57 yr old Daniel Casgrain of Abbotsford sentenced to 4 yrs in jail for the beating death of his common law wife, Ricky Priester, back in 2008.
-Former city engineer says Abbotsford is going down the wrong path, if they ask for federal P3 funding for the Stave Lake water project.  He says there are plenty of other, cheaper options to deal with the potential future water shortage.
-Dignitaries will be on hand to oversee the grand opening of a new 20 bed mental health program in Chilliwack this afternoon.

-78 yr old Cyril Andrew Williams missing, last seen Monday morning.  He is African Canadian, 5'6, 170lbs with balding grey hair and brown eyes. He is believed to be driving his 1999 green 4-door Chevy Cavalier with the BC licence plate 821 HDR
-Chilliwack Times reports longtime resident and local contractor Gerry Goosen will run for city council.
-Operation Red Nose already looking for volunteers.  Get a volunteer form at the RCMP office on Airport Rd.
-UFV Mission launches a new graphic and digital design diploma program.
-Education Minister George Abbott considers legislating teachers to end their job action.

-Chilliwack Community Fire Drill is today at 6:30pm.  Residents are asked to check their smoke detectors and draft a fire escape plan with the family.

-Chilliwack RCMP looking for more information, after a man was found stabbed near Garrison last Friday.  The man had surgery, and will survive, but isn't talking to police.
-BC Liberals say they will spend $165 million on special needs students, but BCTF president Susan Lambert says the money won't dissuade teachers from going to court next week, asking for guidance around a ruling that says they have the right to negotiate class size and composition.
-Health Canada advising parents to limit the amount of time kids spend on cell phones.  They say evidence of there being a cancer risk isnt conclusive, but we should be on the safe side.
