Wine Guide

AA) Ask Me Anything Wine

Have you ever walked into a wine shop or liquor store to choose a bottle or two of wine and felt a little overwhelmed by the sheer vastness of the selection?  That happens to absolutely everyone, it really does, and even my own ten years of Wine Guide experience hasn’t completely eliminated that rushing woozy feeling when faced with a wall of the unknown.

I quickly gained a good working knowledge of the grape varieties and wines in British Columbia when I started in the wine business.  But, working in an exclusively B.C. wine shop ten years ago was limiting, and when people came in looking for Shiraz or Zinfandel (which were not being grown in the province at that time) I wanted to be able to recommend an alternative B.C. bottle to them.  The only way to really know what those varietal wines were like was to purchase and taste them.  So off I went to the government liquor store and there I stood in front of the Aussie Shiraz and Californian Zinfandel not knowing what to do.  Thankfully, a wine acquaintance from the Chilliwack Rotary Club happened upon me and after hearing my dilemma, he proficiently picked out the perfect example of both of those wines, a great Chilean Cabernet, and a bottle of Spanish Cava for me to taste.  Thank goodness for friends who know!

My dear people, let me be your friend who knows.

You are familiar with the Wine Guide link on the StarFM and Country 107.1 home pages that direct you to this page because you are reading it.  Okay, now look up at the top of the page and you will see ‘Have a wine question for Rose?’  If you click on that you can send me an email to ask me anything about wine.  I am not saying that I know every single answer but I can certainly offer you sound suggestions, and if there is a question you have that stumps me I promise to do some research and come up with an answer.

I like the concept of being the Fraser Valley’s Dear Abby of wine.  Now all of you wine drinkers and I can get to work indulging ourselves with gorgeous food and exceptional wines in the name of research and knowledge, which in my humble opinion, is never wasted effort.
