Chilliwack Curling Club hosts Provincial Championships

March 15 - 20

CURLING PARALLELS HOCKEY AS NATIONAL SPORT Curling has lately taken a giant step in becoming Canada's National Sport. We have witnessed the interest during the Olympics with the men winning a gold and the women a silver.  The finals drew as big a National/International audience as the hockey finals.

The general public is invited to attend the BC Mixed Curling Champsionship at the Chilliwack Curling Club from March 15 - 20. Admittance is by donation to the local Junior Program. Draws will be held daily at noon and 7:00 pm. Additional information on the championship can be found at www.curlchilliwack.org

The 2009/2010 season in Chilliwack further proves that curling is making headway. The success experienced at the Provincial level by the Chilliwack High School and Junior curlers is further proof of strong participation. Chilliwack Curling Club also sent provincial participants to the Senior Men Masters levels (70+ and the 60+ years). The 70+ team, past provincial champions skipped by Ernie Sawatzky, finished in 2nd place in their round robin competition. The 60+ team skipped by Bernie Sparkes, past national and world champion, was defeated in a tie breaker for a spot in the semi-finals.
Currently, we have another Chilliwack team getting ready the Provincial Mixed Curling Championship which will be hosted by Chilliwack Curling Club 15-20 March 2010.  The Bruce Renwick team has Jane Adam (3rd), Ken Britz (2nd), and Brittany Giesbrecht (lead and recent graduate of the High School and Junior programs). The quality of play will be  at the highest caliber with the majority of curlers having experience at the provincial and national levels. Eight teams representing the curling regions of British Columbia will vie for a spot at the National Curling Championship to be held later this year.

The schedule of events is as follows: March 15th is designated as a practice day for the participating teams. Eight mixed curling teams (2 men & 2 women on each team) representing 11 curling regions in BC will compete in a round robin competition (each team plays each other once) to determine BC berth in 2011 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship to be held in Morris, MB, 13-20 November 2010.
