The photo of a corn maze in New Brunswick shaped into a giant Terry Fox tribute may have gone viral, but it’s not the most impressive one. For that, you need to look no further than Chilliwack. Diane Bruinsma with the Chilliwack Corn Maze says they’ve been planning this for more than two years.

“Meeting with Terry’s brother Darrell was really cool…just to listen to some of his stories and to think about some of the planning that THEY went through before the start of their trip (in 1980).  So for me, I think that was my favourite part of it.”

She says the one in New Brunswick is nice, but it isn’t really a maze…it’s just a picture in the corn.  For this one, they started with the image on a computer program and put it together from there.

“and then when we plant our field we plant it and cross plant it into a grid.  We’ll count our squares in the field when it’s about 6 inches high.  Then we get our row counts, stake out a hundred by a hundred or a thousand by a thousand squares, connect the dots and then rotavate the pathways in between.”

The maze has interactive displays with Terry Fox trivia to help guide you along.  They also have two sections, one of them is shorter for the kids and school groups.

This of course is all in honor of the 35th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope. Bruinsma says you can come check it out, but they also have an event on September 12th, where they’ll raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation.
