One year later, no animal cruelty charges laid against Chilliwack cattle workers

(Submitted by Martin McMahon) Today marks one year since an animals rights group brought forward a video appearing to show workers at a Chilliwack cattle farm abusing cows, yet nobody has been charged in relation to the case.

This lack of action since the BC SPCA recommended charges against eight Chilliwack Cattle Sales workers is worrying, says Peter Fricker with the Vancouver Humane Society.

“We don’t know what the reason is for the delay, but it does seem unusual, and it does raise concerns that animal cruelty might not be taken as seriously as it should, and we hope that’s not the case,” says Fricker.

We checked in with Gordon Comer, who speaks for the Crown, about if or when we can expect charges, and he says that is still something.

“No decision’s been made yet,” says Comer. “The Criminal Justice Branch will announce a decision when a decision has been made.”

While no charges have been laid, the farm did fire eight workers shown in the video in the days following its release.
