ChilliwackA recent audit of the City of Chilliwack’s finances recommended that the city make sure it keeps on top of infrastructure improvements, since in a lot of communities roads are deteriorating faster than they are being repaired.

Mayor Sharon Gaetz says the City is in pretty good shape in that department.

“We don’t defer maintenance for short term gain so this is just a heads up from the auditor that it’s going to be required in our budgets in the future to demonstrate that we’re looking after that. But the City of Chilliwack has been able to maintain our infrastructure at a really good rate and prepare for the future.”

The federal budget released this week didn’t have much in the way of infrastructure spending for communities, but Gaetz says the feds are recognizing the needs.

“The Federation of Canadian Municipalities has been working hard to get the attention of the federal government. And so I know that monies are not earmarked until two years down the road to add to infrastructure projects, but it seems that the FCM is really pleased with the response.”

Gaetz says they’re hoping to get federal and provincial help at some point for the bridge going from Vedder road to Cultus Lake.
