coalition-brand-Protect-Fraser-800Representatives of the Protect the Fraser Coalition will be presenting to the Metro Vancouver Climate Action Committee this afternoon, expressing their concerns about the location of a planned waste recycling facility in Chilliwack. Lina Azeez with the Watershed Watch Salmon Society says their issue lies with the proposed location of the Aevitas plant on Cannor Rd.

“We do want Metro Vancouver to be aware that this facility is slated to be built on the banks of the Fraser River and should there ever be a catastrophe…a flood, an earthquake, a spill, anything of the sort….it would be Metro Vancouver (communities) that would be impacted.”

Mark Angelo with the Outdoor Recreation Council will be presenting along with Azeez.

While Chilliwack council has approved the facility, it’s now in the hands of the environment ministry, and opponents are hoping their voices will be heard. The facility will be handling things like PCBs and mercury. The city of Chilliwack say they’re comfortable with the location and that all the proper safeguards are in place. Aevitas also has a spotless environmental record.
