The devastation from “Superstorm” Sandy has been, as expected, tremendous. It’s hit the New Jersey Coast and New York City the hardest. ABC News Reporter Chris Cuomo was in lower Manhattan in New York City when the flood waters rolled in.
“Water stood 4-8 feet deep in the city’s 7 main subway tunnels, shutting down almost all of the worlds largest underground transit system. The financial heart of the country is barely beating, as floodwaters surrounded Wall St, closing the New York Stock Exchange again today.”
Much of lower Manhattan is powerless because of damage to the electrical system from floodwater that lapped at three sides of the island and about 50 homes in Queens were destroyed by fire.
U-S President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster for New York City and Long Island, which allows for federal disaster funding to be used. At least 17 people have been killed by the storm and millions are without power across several states. Winds in parts of Ontario are expected to reach 100kms an hour today. One woman in Toronto was also killed by flying debris.
